Zakspeed is a motor racing team from Germany, founded in 1968 by Erich Zakowski. Their home town of Niederzissen is located not far away from the Nürburgring race track.
Zakspeed was the official Ford team in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) series, a predecessor of the current DTM. The company constructed the Group 5 Capri based on the MKIII production model. During this period, the Zakspeed team achieved a number of victories including the overall championship in 1981 with driver Klaus Ludwig.
This spectacular Capri was unveiled at the support race for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim on 29/07/78 which was half way through the DRM championship. The Livery was the black and the red/yellow colours of Zakspeed's main sponsors Mampe (Mampe is a bitter-orange German liqueur).
With only one day's testing, Heyer took pole position by 4 seconds from the championship leading BMW 320 of Harald Ertl. In the race the car was leading but only completed 5 laps, retiring with engine trouble opposite the Zakspeed/Ford hospitality box.
In the remainder of the season Heyer took 3 poles and a first victory for the Capri at the Nurburgring in October.
